England captain Joe Root stated levelling the Ashes at 2-2 round off a summer that’s been a»huge success» for English cricket.
Victory in an incredible final saw England win the initial World Cup in July.
Them inspired into an astonishing triumph in victory and the next Test at The Oval, though they didn’t regain the Ashes.
«What a summer of cricket it has been,» said .
England’s World Cup final victory over New Zealand came following a super more than was tied, although, at Headingley, Stokes played among those all-time wonderful innings to lead the hosts for their highest ever Test run-chase, the last 76 runs coming at a last-wicket stand using Jack Leach.
«It’s been phenomenal,» added the Yorkshire batsman. «This World Cup was incredible, for this to finish how it did, designed for fantastic viewing — not just the England matches, but around the board.
«It was backed up by this equally matched Ashes series. Support that was brilliant blessed us during along with the cricket was fairly gripping. It was hard to participate in at times, particularly when we had been on the end of this.
«It has been a massive success for English cricket and a great chance to spring the game ahead in this nation.»
England’s defeat in the fourth Test at Old Trafford ensured Australia could not lose the show and would keep the Ashes.
Defending a record which has seen them never lose a home series the series levelled using a success at The Oval.
«A 2-2 score looks a hell of a lot easier than 3-1,» said , who has failed to win either of the Ashes series as captain. «It’s probably a fair outcome.
«There’ve been instances when we have been outside proficient and we have been cluttered to the odd hour here and there, which has cost usbut we’ve always fought quite hard.
«Hopefully that is going to be a huge stepping stone and beginning point from where we could kick on as a group.»
And Root his desire to be in control when England attempt to win back the urn at the tour of Australia at 2021-22, stating he wishes to be ruler for the»long haul».
«I’m distressed to take this team forward,» he explained. «I’m in a really privileged position to become captain of the Test group and I will do everything I can to get us really well prepared for going down there and doing something very specific.»
England all-rounder Ben Stokes:»This was a bizarre feeling at the end. We are very satisfied with what we managed to do in this game but we couldn’t win the Ashes.
«In the onset of summer everyone was so excited about what we had ahead, now summer time has come to an end it’s been amazing to be part of as a player.
«I don’t think you may ever return and ask what if we’d done this or done different. It’s been and that is revealed in the end result. I think that it’s an unbiased effect between two and teams everyone was treated to a excellent series and since Ashes cricket constantly is.
«I’ll return Headingley in a few years’ time with fond memories likely, but I’d swap it for winning for the Ashes still.»
Asked if Joe Root is the Perfect man to take England forward, Stokes explained:»100 percent»
England bowler Jofra Archer, who had been named man of the game after taking 6-62 in the first innings:»From the minute I have set an England shirt on it has been exciting cricket. I am glad we could draw on the sequence. Jeez… bowling at Steve Smith was a task. I am glad to see the back of him.»
Former England captain Michael Vaughan:»Steve Smith was joy to watch. From where he was Edgbaston, that innings was particular. His staff were gone at 122-8 and how that he shepherded Peter Siddle and played with control. This was among the Test innings. He’s been a joy to watch.
«With England, I think we might see a change in strategy the Evaluation team takes. Perhaps the games will be missed by the players if they are playing all 3 formats. The Test team requires a small amount of TLC and Joe Root is your skipper to take them forward.»
